Tree Care and Your Lawn - How to Make Your Trees and Lawn Coexist

If you have ever tried to establish turf on a lawn occupied by mature trees, then you already know that this is a challenge.

Turf and trees are like dogs and cats. They do not peacefully coexist in the same place naturally. The reasons for this are much the same in both cases. In the case of canines versus felines, both are at or near the top of the food chain. They sustain themselves by feeding on smaller animals. Put simply, they are competitors and have no use for each other. So they tend to stay away from one another in nature. But they both make such good pets! Some of us prefer one over the other, and so there are households with cats and households with dogs. But haven't you seen a household with both a cat and a dog? Of course you have. Some of them are chaotic.

The dog chases the cat, knocking over furniture, small appliances, and house guests in the process. The cat resorts to guerrilla tactics that would make Al Qaeda proud. But peace is scarce. In other homes there is harmony. Although they may not love each other, the dog and cat respect each other's place in the family and thus a balance is achieved. Since this is not a discussion on family pets, let us simply assume that something is done by the harmonized dog and cat homeowner that is not done by the chaotic dog and cat homeowner. In other words, if you want to have them both, then you have to do something to facilitate them living together.

Trees and turf are much the same. In nature they both require the same materials and conditions for sustenance. Because of this we do not often find grasses growing under trees. Instead we find meadows where grasses flourish and forests where trees do. Domestically, we see homes that predominantly support trees, mimicking the forest floor with a bed of mulch, and a full canopy overhead providing shade. Or there are homes that prefer turf, keeping full sun exposure on a perfectly manicured carpet of emerald beauty. Of course there are the homes that have both. Some - or unfortunately most - are a mess.

The homeowner tries in vain to grow grass in spite of the fact that trees are spreading surface roots all over the lawn and stealing sunlight. At some point comes the surrender to a landscape that has that balding, varicose veined look that inspires only ridicule when gazed upon. But there are homes that seem to have found some secret to keeping both in harmony. The turf lies beautifully and peacefully under the canopies of mature trees, giving the property the look of a PGA golf course and inspiring praise and envy from all who see it. As in the case of the peaceful pets, this is not simply coincidence. The space that these competitors occupy has to made livable for both of them in order for them both to thrive.

The secret to achieving this harmony lies primarily underground. The root system of the turf must be optimized so that it gets all that it needs to support a constantly growing turf cover. This means that the tree roots must be encouraged to grow at a depth that is below the grass roots. The good news is that trees are happy to behave this way. They only put their roots at shallow depths when they cannot put them deeper. Here is where the caretaker intervenes. With techniques such as vertical mulching and rootwell installations (ask your certified arborist for details), trees can be encouraged to grow deep root systems that do not compete with the turf. In addition, pruning can be employed in the canopy to give the right amount of light for the grass to grow. It takes work, but you can have both trees and turf in your lawn. I started going to the gym twice a week with my brother about a year and a half ago. I sit in front of my computer in my home office for 8-9 hours a day and I get very stiff and sore. Sometimes I have problems sleeping because my back hurts. Sitting that much and doing the same type of movements all day long is very hard on your body. You have to have some sort of release, to keep your body from falling apart.

Going to the gym 3-4 times a week is ideal, but with my hectic schedule, 2 days a week for a quick workout is the most I can manage. My brother comes over to my house between 12-2pm, we eat lunch, digest for an hour or so and hit the gym. My brother suffers from poor sleep and doesn't feel very energetic a lot of the time, so from sometimes he just tags a long and doesn't work out.

We go to Bally's Gym which is only about a 10 minute drive from my house. Once we get there, I usually start on the treadmill while he hits the bike. I like to start off slow, at 3.5 mph on the treadmill for about 3 minutes until I am warmed up. I'll check my heart rate to see where I am at and then at 3 minutes I'll set the speed to 5.5 mph. This is fast enough to start running. I could be going a lot faster but I've found that with only going to the gym twice a week, if I set the speed any faster then I can't go for very long.

I continue to run for at least 8 minutes, but I'll go as long as I can while still feeling comfortable. If I run too long I start to feel the vein in my neck pulsating and getting sore and I know it's time to slow down. After I hit about the 8 minute mark I slow back down to 3.5 mph. I begin my cool-down. Every 60 seconds I slow it down .5 mph. When I get to about 2mph, I stop and I'm done on the treadmill.

Next I hit a machine that works on my back. That's where I have the most issues and that's what keeps me from getting a good night sleep, so I make sure to work on that really good. Then I move to a machine next to it that works on my calves. Next I go to a machine that works on my legs. Then over to a machine that works my arms. Once I am done with all of that, I do the whole loop again twice. I aim for 3 sets but sometimes I only get 2 done because of lack of time. Once in awhile I will mix it up, but thats the normal routine.

Sometimes we will skip the gym altogether and go on a long vigorous walk at a nearby golf course. It's important to work out as often as possible without overdoing it. In the coming years I hope to work less and workout more so I can stay healthy while getting older.

Waterproof Photography Tips:

1) Know how to use your camera. This seems a bit obvious but if you don't understand the full capacity and capability of your camera you could miss out on some great photos or video. When I was in Washington state my boyfriend and I were at a beach where seals were playing. I could have filmed some great seal acrobatics - but alas I did not know how to properly use my camera!

2) Know the weather conditions of the area you are visiting. Having lived in Washington state, specifically Whidbey Island as a child I knew there was a large chance of wet weather as well as lots of chances to visit waterfalls, streams, rivers and lakes. The Pixtreme camera I bought my boyfriend was perfect for trekking through the beaches and forests of Washington state; frankly it's perfect for any weather condition and any terrain, even the bottom of the ocean! More on that later...

3)Know how to hold your camera steady for video footage. This may seem like a no brainer, but I could have shot far better video if it had dawned on me to create a tripod with my body when filming. With the particular camera I was using I was able to film with no worries of getting bumped and dropping my camera causing damage, but I wasn't able to capture audio with it...Please refer back to tip number 1 for more on proper use of your camera.

4) Clean the lens and case. It's amazing how much better photos look not only after you capture it, but while you are trying to take it. Every camera pack should have soft cotton cloths to clean the lens and body of the camera.

5) Always carry extra batteries. Remember that Pringles commercial? You can't eat just one...Likewise with cameras, you can never take just one photo. I was so snap-happy I blazed through my batteries when taking photos (I could have saved on battery use if I knew how to use it also!).

6) Bring extra memory cards or film. 512 MB of memory should seem like enough memory for photos - that's approximately 200+ pictures - but it wasn't enough for me. Of course, I was also experimenting with video which ate memory, but I really wish I had thought to bring extra SD cards with me on our trip.
